Yuck! I don't like this one bit!!!

I'm reading a romance right now...one book with three shorter pieces in it. The first is interesting and it has held my interest so far...but it is written in third person omniscient. Wow I do not like it!! I don't know if I can even pinpoint why. It just seems very bizarre to read all the character's thoughts and feelings rather than just one character's. Have you ever read a book like this...what did you think???? Seems like this would be tough to write too.

  1. This is tough. I've read one and loved it and have even decided to make my first novel in third due to how many characters I have. I tested it out on a sample chapter and it goes great, I wa shocked myself.

Still, it's not for everyone. I like first the most, personally.

  2. I like writing in third limited, but third omniscent is way different.

  3. I would say that J.D Robb's books are like that, or she is just head-hoping all over the place. I was thrown when I started her In Death series, but now I LOVE them. I don't think I'll ever try to write like that because I'm afraid it'll only be headhopping when I do it-lol.

  4. To me, omniscient is "old school" - think Dickens (or crack open a Dickens tome) and there you are. Before I started writing seriously, reading 3rd omniscient didn't faze me, but now... I can really see how we don't attach to any character when we get all their thoughts at once. Kinda like being an impartial judge in a courtroom and hearing all sides of the story but not relating to anyone's feelings.

  5. Yes! Every other paragraph is in someone else's head and I just don't care to know what everyone is thinking. I care about the heroinne (the mc) and the hero....that's it.
