Ever change POV after something's been written???

I am seriously thinking of a POV change on my 3rd novel. It's currently in 1st and completely finished. I read this post about POV today over at Fiction Groupie's blog and it really made me think. I remembered how frustrating it was at times to write that book and NOT be able to get in my hero's head.

Has anyone ever taken an entire novel and changed the POV??? Sounds like an extreme amount of work. But maybe it would be worth it???

  1. Stephanie, Wow, an entire novel?? I've gone and changed POV midway through, but not after I completed it. I know when I did change the POV on my half completed novel-I loved it. It allowed certain awkward sentences or challenging descriptions to flow more smoothly. I think you could do it, and if you find it's too much to dig into, maybe work on it a little bit at a time. Or-you may realize that it was fine to begin with and you were just obsessing. I never do that. (I'm totally lying) :-)

  2. After I'd labored to get thirty pages of my first novel down, I had this nagging thought that I should switch to first person. I fought it because I was so FAR in (Hahaha!) Finally I gave in, and the story came alive. I'm polishing, and it's still a lot of work, but it WORKS this time. I would really be upset to do that 200 pages in, but if you've got that nagging idea, and you're sure it's not a trick of procrastination, then you might as well try a few chapters to see, right? My vote- go for it!

  3. Yeah....all 92,000 words of it.....I went in and changed just the first scene and it's not bad. Sounds pretty good. But just from those first 4 pages, I can tell it would take an insane amount of work to do this for the entire book.

  4. Wow, that would be a lot of work, but it'd be worth it if it makes the story better. Maybe you could do random bits of the story to see if that's really what you want to do with it and then if it is, finish the rest of it. It'd be aweful to get halfway through and realize that's not actually how you wanted it after all.
