I know tons of writers who feel completely inspired when they’re writing to Metallica, Beethoven, Jay Z, Brittany Spears….whatever floats their boat. Me…I just can’t do it. Music certainly inspires me….songwriting is poetry set to words, no matter what the genre…rap, pop, metal…it’s all art as far as I’m concerned. And since I started writing seriously, I listen to the words of songs much more intently than I ever did before and I appreciate the heart and soul that went into them. It’s not easy to put one’s insides into something…then put it out there for judgment.
But I just cannot concentrate on my own writing if there is other stuff going on around me. I am writing this blog with the music for my blog playing in the background. And I LOVE the music (it’s the NKOTB medley) and I totally want to abandon my cocoon and dance around my living room, belting out every lyric I’ve known by heart since I was 11 years old. But writing to it…even just a blog, is kinda difficult. For me anyway.
Silence seems to be my muse. Nothing gets me typing faster than complete silence. I can hear my characters voices better…see their faces more clearly….envision their actions without distraction.

Hi! Found you via Lady Glamis's blog. :-)
ReplyDeleteIt depends on what music it is as to whether I can write to it. Modern-day music...no way. The lyrics distract me far too much. I often put on classical music or Big Bang music. Frank Sinatra has an album that is my "writing" album - love the soothing melodies and his voice. :-)
Hi! Nice to meet you!!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's interesting we all have our own preferences. I can write to music a lot of the time and other times it's terribly difficult. No doubt about it, though, music is definitely inspiring to this writer :)
ReplyDeleteI used to never write to music, then I started going to a coffee house to write. I can write to their music (mostly because it's incomprehensible and unfamiliar to me) but if I try to write to music that I know, I find myself typing the lyrics. :)
ReplyDeleteSilence is a distraction to me, actually. I used to write with silence, though. Now I put earbuds in and listen to 80s music. It's background noise. I barely am paying attention to it, actually.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you. I cannot have music when I write. I like silence as well. :)
ReplyDeleteHi, Stephanie! It's nice to meet you!
ReplyDeleteI definitely listen to music while I write. But it's usually movie soundtracks, that way I can get lost in the beautiful sounds without subconsciously being influenced/distracted by any lyrics. This also helps me block out any outside sounds, like people walking by my door, talking, dog barking, etc. Once my concentration is broken, I really struggle to get it back!
I can write with my kids around, but I don't like to. My best writing comes with silence too.
ReplyDeleteSo funny how different we all are!!! But very cool!! Even my daughter in another room watching tv distracts me sometimes....especially today..she had on Marly & Me...and it was the end....I started getting all teary while trying to do some editing on my MS!
